Kelvin Long and Rob Swinney, supported ably by John Davies and Gill Norman, delivered the ever-popular Starship Engineer course at the HQ of the British Interplanetary Society on 12/13th November.
Suitable for most ages but on this occasion aimed at the interested layperson with a grasp of basic algebra the course can be tailored to suit undergraduates studying advanced science or engineering to school students, with or without any calculus training!
The delivered content in November was a first day of learning how real interstellar spacecraft might be built using topical concepts and spacecraft design techniques complemented by a workshop where attendees got the chance to put these ideas in to practice - albeit on this occasion at an introductory level. The second day followed a similar format but with the interesting twist to look at designs and concepts from science fiction literature; this helped reinforce the lessons learnt.
