Foundations of Interstellar Studies: Solidarity for the Interstellar Vision

19 June 2017

The co-chairman for the workshop, Professor Roman Kezerashvili, had set a challenge, for the participants to come up with some short wording as a statement about some of our discussions. Work started on this during the Wednesday evening after dinner with a short informal meeting over until the late hours between Robert Kennedy III, Robert Freeland, Kelvin F. Long, Alexandra Limpert and Jeremy Munday. In addition, some email contributions were received, in particular from Brent Ziarnick of the US Air Force. Kelvin Long then pulled all the text together overnight, and then in the morning some word surgery was applied by Robert Kennedy and Robert Freeland.

The text was then shown to several people during the morning, including C Bangs, Kari Weatherbee, Gregory Matloff, Roman Kezerashvili, Elena Ancona, Harold White. During the first coffee break participants were shown an earlier version of it and then the final version was put up at the end of the day and closed off at 17.50 hours as a declared consensus of majority. The purpose of this was really to see if a diverse group of individuals could come up with something in such a short time, and the participants stepped up to the mark and performed.

What’s up with 1998 KY26?

Adam Hibberd I’m not sure whether you might already be aware of this but there are really weird objects orbiting the Sun which astronomers have observed and tried to categorize as a new class of object, ‘the dark comets’. But what makes them weird? It’s the rather strange fact that the peculiar orbital paths they […]

Mission to an Interstellar Object

5 May 2026

Adam Hibberd Many readers in-the-know will have heard of the future ESA ‘Comet Interceptor’ mission, due to launch in 2029. For those not-in-the-know it is a spacecraft desgined to loiter at the famous Sun/Earth Lagrange 2 (L2) point for a few years, waiting for a ‘pristine’ Oort Cloud comet to come flying in to the […]

The Initiative for Interstellar Studies is entirely dependent upon the goodwill of its volunteer teams, the minor amounts we receive from our activities and the sale of our merchandise but also the kindness of donors. In order to advance our mission of achieving interstellar flight over the next century, we need your help and support.
