Third Announcement of the Workshop on Foundations of Interstellar Flight, 13-15 June 2017, New York, USA

20 March 2017

Dear fellow researchers,

Following many requests, we would like to inform you that the submission deadline for the Workshop on Interstellar Flight has been extended until the 25th of March.
You have still time to submit your abstract, the template is available on the website: http://www.citytech.cuny.edu/physicsworkshop/

The workshop on Foundations of Interstellar Flight, that will take place next June 2017, 13th-15th, at the CUNY New York City College of Technology, is organized by the Institute for Interstellar Studies, the Physics Department and the Center for Theoretical Physics at CUNY City Tech.

We take this opportunity to give you some exciting updates on the event, which you may find useful.

First of all, we are pleased to announce that Dr Harold "Sonny" White will be the Chairman for the day 3 sessions on 'Breakthrough Propulsion'. Dr White is currently the Advanced Propulsion Theme Lead for the Nuclear System Working Group, NASA Engineering Directorate, Johnson Space Center. He will accompany Professor Roman Kezerashvili and Kelvin F. Long who will be acting as Chairman for the Day 2 and Day 1 sessions on 'Sails and Beams' and 'Energetic Reaction Engines' respectively.

To summarize, the three days technical sessions' topics and respective Chairmen are the following:

DAY 1: ENERGETIC REACTION ENGINES, Chaired by Kelvin Long
DAY 2: SAILS & BEAMS, Chaired by Roman Kezerashvili
DAY 3: BREAKTHROUGH PROPULSION, Chaired by Harold “Sonny" White

We are glad to announce that registration will take place on the evening of Monday 12th June during a special social-cultural dinner at the Harvard Club of New York City (https://www.hcny.com/) 35 West 44th Street. This event is free of charge for all registered participants. In addition, the evening will be accompanied by outstanding art exhibitions by C Bangs (http://www.cbangs.com/), Carmela Tal Baron (http://www.carmelatalbaron.com/) and Kari Weatherbee (https://www.theoldmillyard.com/) who will all be in attendance. Moreover, art work will be exhibited from the artists Adrian Mann (http://www.bisbos.com/), David Hardy (http://www.astroart.org/) and Alex Storer (http://thelightdream.net/). Inspiring classical music and a poetry reading will also provide your evening entertainment as you enjoy your discussions about the Cosmos and interstellar travel.

To conclude, let us mention that confirmed potential speakers are listed below:
  1. Effects of Enhanced Graphene Reflection on Performance of Sun-launched Interstellar Arks, Gregory L Matloff, New York City Collect of Technology
  2. Solar System Escape Mission with Solar Sail Spacecraft in the Framework of Post-Newtonian Gravitational Theory, Olga L. Starinova and Irina V. Gorbunova, Samara National Research University, Russian Federation.
  3. Enabling the First Generation of Interstellar Missions, Philip M Lubin, UC Santa Barbara, Breakthrough Initiative
  4. Heat Transfer in Fusion Starship Radiation Shielding Systems, Michel Lamontagne, Icarus Interstellar
  5. The Prediction of Particle Bombardment Interaction Physics due to Ions, Electrons and Dust in the Interstellar Medium on a Gram-Scale Interstellar Probe, Kelvin F. Long, Institute for Interstellar Studies / Breakthrough Initiative
  6. Solar Sail Propulsion: A Roadmap from Today's Technology to Interstellar Sailships, Les Johnson and Edward E. Montgomery, Tennessee Valley Interstellar Workshop / MontTech LLC
  7. The Fusion Fuel Resource Base in our Solar System, Robert G. Kennedy III, Institute for Interstellar Studies.
  8. Pilot Wave Model for Impulsive Thrust from RF Test Device Measured in Vacuum, Harold G White, NASA Johnson Space Center
  9. Continuous Grid Inertial Electrostatic Confinement Fusion, Raymond J. Sedwick et al., University of Maryland
  10. Tests of Fundamental Laws and Principles of Physics in Interstellar Flight, Roman Ya. Kezerashvili, City Tech, City University of New York
  11. Positron Propulsion for Interplanetary and Interstellar Travel, Ryan Weed  et al., Positron Dynamics Inc / Cornell University
We look forward to your submission and participation in the Workshop on Foundations of Interstellar Flight!

Mission to an Interstellar Object

5 May 2026

Adam Hibberd Many readers in-the-know will have heard of the future ESA ‘Comet Interceptor’ mission, due to launch in 2029. For those not-in-the-know it is a spacecraft desgined to loiter at the famous Sun/Earth Lagrange 2 (L2) point for a few years, waiting for a ‘pristine’ Oort Cloud comet to come flying in to the […]
